In this multi-part blog series, we’re taking an inside look at some super cool online courses created specifically for designers – to help you grow your business, become more profitable, and market yourself better. Check out the other posts in this series! In this post, we’re taking a look at the Badassery Academy from Samantha Parker and Kathy Rasmussen.
“If you build it, they will not come.”
While building their own businesses, Samantha Parker and Kathy Rasmussen learned that putting their products and services out there wasn’t enough. To become badass entrepreneurs, they had to show up, put in the work, and build a community that wants to be a part of what they’re doing and saying.
This is especially true for service-based businesses like interior design. People need to know who you are and trust you and like you in order to build a business relationship with you. Being visible and building trust is key.
“The community is the real golden egg. That’s where all of your time and energy should be spent: building your community.”
Too often, though, women feel like they hit a wall while building their business. They run into obstacles, look at other successful entrepreneurs, and think: “She can do it, but I can’t.” They’re afraid that they somehow don’t measure up or don’t have what it takes.
Becoming Badass: Boosting Women Entrepreneurs Everywhere
When Samantha and Kathy met at a conference through a mutual friend, Samantha had her own social media management agency and Kathy ran her own operations management business. Over time, the two women collaborated and became friends. When Samantha had an idea to launch a business magazine for women entrepreneurs, Kathy joined in and the Badassery Magazine was born.
The magazine is built around the Urban Dictionary definition of badassery:
“Engaging in seemingly impossible activities and achieving success in a manner that renders all onlookers completely awestruck.”
Except building a successful business isn’t impossible.
“You’ve got everything you need. You’ve got all the boxes checked too, just like those other successful women. They’re just different boxes. You can be as successful as she is, and you can do it exactly how you are right now.
The other important thing to know is that success evolves over the period of the entrepreneur’s journey. Your definition of success changes. Maybe it’s making your first hundred bucks (or thousand), or having more time to spend with your family, or just being happy. Samantha and Kathy also encourage people to embrace the fact that they’re going to fail. Failure is just a necessary part of the process.
The Badassery Academy: About the Course
Now two years in to publishing Badassery Magazine, Samantha and Kathy are working to help women become successful entrepreneurs in other ways, too.
They launched a twice-annual, 12-week course that helps women structure and build their businesses. Participants range from fledgling entrepreneurs who are newly online to those working to hit the next level in their business. In its third run, the course uses weekly videos, worksheets, and weekly group calls to explore topics covering:
- Mindset techniques to think like an entrepreneur
- Goal setting to create cash flow
- Learning what offers your audience will buy, and how to create them
- Building an engaged audience
- Creating content that will grab your audience’s attention
- Promoting yourself while adding value, not being “salesy”
- Be seen as an expert in your field
- Develop an effective sales funnel
- When to add team members (or outsource), and how to delegate like a boss
- Collaborating with the right people to boost your growth and visibility
- Technology that will make your work easier, faster, and more effective
The course content stays consistent, and is supplemented with different guest experts each session. A private Facebook group for participants welcomes questions and conversation, and a resource library offers useful how-tos and other tools. Participants can move through the course at their own pace, and get lifelong access to the course materials.
In addition to the Badassery Academy, Samantha and Kathy have created a massive library of Badassery Magazine courses, including:
- Pop Up Pinterest: a 90-minute workshop on the power of Pinterest and how you can optimize your account to only spend around 30 minutes a week pinning.
- Badass Boss’s Guide to Promotion: A step-by-step guide to constructing a promotion campaign that captivates your audience and converts them into paying customers.
- F*ck Yes Proposals: The step-by-step of writing a killer proposal that will make any client say yes (no going to bid!).
Not to mention the Badassery Podcast; a new book, “Badassery Style: A Step-By-Step Guide to Party Planning Your Way to An Ultra-Engaged Community”; and the Rising Tribe Leadership Circle mastermind group.
Talk about two seriously badass women entrepreneurs.
